Abstrak

The research describes the application of Problem-Based Learning in teaching writing skill. The research is concluded based on the problem of: 1) How is the students writing skill of SMA Al-Khairiyah Kelapian? 2) How is the effectiveness of problem-based learning on writing ability? And the purpose of the research are:1) To know student writing skill at this school. 2) To know the effectiveness of problem-based learning on writing ability. By applying quasi experiment research method, the writer collected data from 47 students spread in two classes, one as experiment class and another as a control class. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test. Based on the result of pre-test the writer got mean score at experimental class (XI MIA) 38,8 and post-test 65,2. While from control class the writer got mean pre-test 29,54 and post-test 46. The score of experiment class increase on 26,4 % it is better than control class students with increase on 16,45 %. According to the data, the score of to (t observation) 14,22 is higher than tt (t table) 1,67 (5%). It means the using experimental learning strategy gives the significant influence in teaching writing. Finally, it is suggest that English teacher should have appropriate method in teaching English and be more motivated in order to make teaching and learning process more enjoyable
