Abstrak
This research investigates the use of code-switching and code-mixing by a lecturer during a Public Speaking class in the fourth semester of the English Education Department at UIN SMH Banten. The study aims to identify the types of code-switching and code-mixing utilized by the lecturer, as well as to analyze the underlying factors influencing their use. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach, the data were collected through classroom observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal three types of code-switching (tag, inter-sentential, and intra sentential) and three types of code-mixing (intra-sentential, intra-lexical, and involving a change in pronunciation). The analysis also identified several contributing factors to the lecturer’s use of language alternation: quoting somebody else, emphatic about something, Interjection, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content interlocutor, aspect of function or purpose of interaction, talking about particular topic and expression group identity or social situation. These findings show that the use of code-switching and code-mixing by the lecturer does not occur solely as a natural consequence of a bilingual context, but also serves to enhance students’ understanding, clarify the material, and create more effective and inclusive classroom interaction.
