Abstrak
The purpose of this research is to analyses the application of critical listening in college-level courses and to describe the difficulties that students encounter during listening activities. This research involves second-semester students at the English Education Department in State Islamic University of Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. There were sixty-two students who participated in this research, five of them agreed to take part in interview to evaluate their critical thinking skills during listening exercises. This research used a qualitative descriptive approach. The data for this research were acquired using questionnaire and interview, with students’ responses confirmed through observation during listening sessions. The results show that 1) students are able to provide a simple explanation from audio material, gather relevant data and apply critical thinking skills, draw connections between theory and the fact in real life, build arguments, analyses, and find assumptions, and finally develop an alternative answer by solving the problems 2) more than half students still find listening exercises difficult, the main challenges revealed by students include vocabulary, speech rate of audio, pronunciation, and accent. The result could provide insight into the implementation of critical thinking in listening class, including its benefits and difficulties for students. The recommendations were presented as suggestions for students, lecturers, and future researchers.
