Abstrak

The aim of this research is to compare between paired reading and skimming technique in improving students’ reading comprehension in class VIII. In this research, the researcher proposes two research questions, those are how is the implementation of paired reading method and skimming technique in teaching reading comprehension at MTs Hikmatul Ulum? and how the difference of students learning outcome in reading comprehension through paired reading and skimming technique at MTs Hikmatul Ulum? To answer the questions researcher used comparative as the research method with data collection technique through pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The participants of this research were 50 students that spared into two classes, class VIII A was taught by paired reading method. Meanwhile class VIII B was taught by skimming method. The mean pre-test scores of paired reading and skimming experimental class students were 50,4 and 53,6 while the post test scores of paired reading and skimming experimental class students were 72,8 and 70,6. The result of the data analysis shows that hypothesis compared with t-table, tcount is bigger than ttable. tcount = 0,58 ˃ ttable = -2,01. The result of this research shows that there is a significant effect using paired reading method and skimming technique in improving students’ reading comprehension and the paired reading method is more effective than skimming technique in improving students’ reading comprehension.
