Abstrak

The objectives of this research are to investigate the students‟ ability and to explore the students‟ difficulties in writing recount text.This research is used case study, the research design was presented using descriptive qualitative method. In this study, the researcher took one class (X) as the subject. X IPS class consists of 10 students. The researcher used a writing test and interview as the instrument of this research.From the result of study, it is found of students‟ writing score in writing recount text from X IPS students of MA Masarratsul Muta‟allimin Banten, students‟ ability and difficulties in writing recount text from the result of students‟ writing test and teacher interview it can be conclude that students have low ability and show that students ability is vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics are fair to poor category in each aspect.From the data above, it can be seen students‟ score in writing recount tets is average 68,4 in poor category level achievement. It can be seen from the largest number of the students is on poor category ( 4 students 40%), it followed by everage category (3 students 30%), then very poor category ( 1 students 10%), and very good category ( 2 students 20%). Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded the difficulties faced by the students were they still difficulties grammatical, spelling error, and they have limited vocabulary to select the appropriate diction. It is suggested for English teacher should be to give the students more practice in writing to improve their vocabulary and grammar in writing recounttext
