Abstrak

The communication process involving code mixing and code switching is a solution to avoid misunderstandings when communicating in a bilingual society between teachers and students at Darul Haitam Islamic Boarding School. This study aims to analyze the forms of code-mixing and code-switching, to describe the factors that cause the emergence of code-mixing and code-switching in English learning in the conversation between the teacher and class X students. The method used is a case study. Qualitative data were obtained using the listening method with document analysis and audio recording techniques. The results of the study are that there are five types of code mixing proposed which are found in teacher and student uterances, namely: Word Insertion, Phrase Insertion, Idiom Insertion, Hybrid Insertion, and Reduplication Insertion. There are three types of code switching used by teachers and students in the classroom, namely: Tag Switching, Intersentential Switching, Intrasentential Switching. Furthermore, the factors that cause code-mixing are internal code-mixing. The form of code switching is code switching from English to Indonesian and vice versa. The causes of code mixing are: Habitual Factors, Spontaneous Factors, Intentional Factors, Learning Materials, and Language Mastery. There is also a factor of code switching in the interaction between teacher and students in classroom discussions in class X Darul Haitam Islamic Boarding School with English material, namely, Speaker, Speech partner, Presence of a third speaker, a change in the situation, and the topic of conversation.
