Abstrak

Classroom interaction is such crucial thing in any education level. It is interaction between the participants in the classroom. International communication theory suggests that seating arrangement can give impact to the teacher how to communicate with the students, how students interact each other, impacting engagement and focus. This qualitative study aims to investigate how classroom seating arrangement in Eighth Grade Students at SMPN 1 Tirtayasa and how the seating arrangements on students can improving interaction in EFL Intermediate Classroom at Eighth Grade Students at SMPN 1 Tirtayasa. This study used classroom observation, questionnaire and interview to obtain the data. The result of the study shows that there are three kinds of seating arrangement used by the English teacher to facilitate classroom interaction during English teaching and learning process. Those are orderly row, U shape and cluster seating arrangement. The finding shows that out of three common of seating arrangements suggested by James and Rod. Furthermore, the interactions mostly happened in both seating arrangements are teacher-students and student-student. Moreover the U-shape design seating arrangement influences and engages students’ language learning in many ways. The objectives were achieved as the teacher show a good relationship, empathy, respect and honesty to the students in teaching the class; demonstrate how to use verbal and non-verbal language; manage the students on their chair one by one and make efficient use of time, and demonstrate high interest and enthusiasm in teaching. So, the teachers should consider to use kinds of seating arrangement in facilitating students’ interaction in English classroom.
