Abstrak

Syntax is one of mayor subfields of linguistics. It concerns on sentences. Sentences in syntax are more than sequences of words. Sentences have systems, linear order and hierarchical structures which relate with the meaning. This study aimed to fi nd out the syntactic structures of the English translation of surah Al - Jumu’ah by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Abdullah Yusuf Ali is a muslim scholar who translates the Holy Qur’an into English. The translation of the Qur’an by Yusuf Ali together with Marmaduke Pic kthall’s translation is the most widely used today. Surah Al - Jumu’ah is selected as a topic of syntactic analysis because it contains important meaning. As example, its nineth verse contains the obligation to perform the Friday prayer. Analyzing the syntax of surah Al - Jumu’ah, the writer uses the theory of tree diagram which breaks down the sentence into its very base construction. The result of this research shows that there are many phrase structuure patterns occur in the Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s translation of surah Al - Jumu’ah. Those phrase structure patterns are classified into (1) the pattern of S, (2) the pattern of VP, (3) the pattern of NP, (4) the pattern of PP, (5) the pattern of ADJP, (6) the pattern of ADVP, and (7) the pattern of CP
