Abstrak
The first language often influences a speaker's ability to learn a second language, particularly in terms of pronunciation. This study investigates the influence of Banten Javanese on English pronunciation among native Banten Javanese speakers, focusing on changes at the segmental level. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method involving 20 respondents who are native speakers of Banten Javanese. Data were collected through observation, questioners and interviews using the Elsa Speak application. Speech Analyzer and Elsa Speak were used as instruments for data analysis. The research findings show that several changes in English segmental features, specifically in vowels and consonants including: the schwa /ə/ was substituted with /ɛ/, /ae/, /ɑ/, and /ɔ/ by 16 participants; fricative sounds /ð/, /v/, and /z/ were produced as /d/, /f/, and /s/ respectively by 6-8 participants; and the final /t/ sound was omitted by 7 participants. The analysis revealed five phonological processes namely: generalization schwa, devoicing, plosivization, simplified diphthong, and consonant deletion. These patterns demonstrate how the phonological differences between Banten Javanese and English influence speakers' pronunciation, leading them to adapt English sounds to match their native language's phonological system.
