Abstrak

This research investigates students' difficulties in writing descriptive text. It is aimed to observe students' difficulties in writing descriptive text. This study used qualitative descriptive method. Meanwhile, the research instruments were designed inform of student work sheets and lists of questions. There were 10 students of class VII D SMPN 2 Cilegon who were involved in this study as the research sample. In analyzing the data, students' writing difficulties were counted and classified into aspects of writing adapted from the theory of H. Douglas Brown. The findings of this study there were three aspects of writing difficulties faced by students, namely Vocabulary, Grammars, and Mechanics. The difficult in vocabulary those students do not understand using vocabulary. They do not consider the vocabulary categories used. They seem to choose words only because of the meaning to complete the sentence. In short, students' word choice errors occur because students have less vocabulary. Students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text on grammar especially on using simple present tenses in adding the suffix s/es. And lastly, student mechanics still experience difficulties in Punctuation, Capitalization, and Spelling. The highest difficulty aspect is the aspect of grammar use while the lowest difficulty aspect is Content. Overall, the problems in this aspect of writing are caused by students' lack of awareness of the rules of writing.
