Abstrak

M.Najmudin. 171230144. The Use of Grammatical Cohesive Devices in Theses Background of Study Written by English Education Department Students of Uin Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. The paper of English Education Department at Faculty of Education and Teachers Training of State Islamic University Sultan Maulana Hasanudin Banten, 2020/2021. This study aimed to understand and explain about kinds of grammatical cohesion and to know the dominant kinds of grammatical cohesion that are used in theses background of study written by English Education Department Students of Uin Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. The subject of this research is undergraduate students. The focus of this study is to know what types and what the dominant kinds of grammatical cohesive devices existing in the background of the study. The method of this research was qualitative content analysis design. The data collecting procedures is reading and understanding the text, choosing the background of study on the theses, and analyzing grammatical cohesive devices. This research applied Miles and Huberman model to analyze the research data through some steps, namely: data collection, data reduction, data display, and concluding. In this research, the researcher took 10 background of study on undergraduate theses as a purposive sampling. The result of the research show of the use of reference on grammatical cohesion types is the highest found in the student's background of study than other types. Likewise, the kinds of grammatical cohesion written by students are 72 reference items (55,81%). 9 substitution items (6,98%). 1 ellipsis item (0,78), and the last is 47 conjunction items (36,43%). In conclusion, the students most dominant used reference in writing background of study in the theses.
