Abstrak

This study investigated (1) the implementation of giving corrective feedback for third year students by teacher in teaching speaking in English Conversation class in SMAN 19 Kabupaten Tangerang; and (2) type of corrective feedback is well used by teacher in teaching speaking in English Conversation class for third year students in SMAN 19 Kabupaten Tangerang . This study is a case study research, it is an inquiry that focus on describing and understanding a group in teaching - learning in speaking English. The research involved an E nglish teacher and 39 third year students of XII IPS 4 at English Conversation class in SMAN 19 Kabupaten Tangerang. To describe most common behavior of giving and receiving corrective feedback, this study gathered specific interactions and conversations b etween teacher and students by observatio n and interviews. The result of the study revealed that (1) the implementation of corrective feedback in teaching speaking in SMAN 19 Kabupaten Tangerang: t he teacher provided corrective feedback to the students’ er roneous. The study found that six types of corrective feedback were provided by the teacher such as recast, explicit correction, clarification request, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation, and prompt. The students use two types of uptake in responses to t he teacher are high uptake (repetition and self - repair) and low uptake (same error, differe nt error, and acknowledgement); and (2) Recast is the most frequent types of corrective feedback to respond students’ errors. Recast is given cause almost is pronunc iation error.
