Abstrak

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of humor stories as teaching materials to enhance students' extensive reading comprehension skills. The objectives of this research are: (1) To find out the implementation of humor stories to enhance students’ extensive reading comprehension skills, (2) To examine the students’ extensive reading comprehension skills before and after using humor stories, and (3) To investigate the significant effect of humor stories to enhance students’ extensive reading comprehension skills. This research used true experimental research with a pretest-posttest control group design. The researcher collected data from 72 students who were divided into two classes, one class as an experimental class and one as a control class. The populations taken in the study were all eighth-grade students at MTSN 1 Kabupaten Serang, while the samples of the experimental class from VIII-3 and control class from VIII-5. The results of this study indicate that the t-test value that the researcher got from the calculation results is greater than the t-table of both significant levels of 5% and 1%. The value of the t-test was 4.427, the value of the t-table in significance 5% was 1.66 or 4.427 > 1.66 and the t-table in significance 1% was 2.38 or 4.427 > 2.38. It is inferred that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Based on the results, it can be concluded that students taught by using humor stories get the highest scores than students who are not taught using humor stories.
