Abstrak

This research examines the interpersonal meaning in students' speech. The object of this research is the analyze moods and modality types in the interpersonal meaning of students' speech. The purposes of this study are 1) To analyze out the mood types used in students' speech at eleventh-grade students of MA Al-Mizan, 2) To analyze out the modality types and value used in students' weak speech at eleventh-grade students of MA Al-Mizan, 3) To analyze how mood and modality are realized in students' speech at eleventh-grade students of MA Al-Mizan. In this study, the source of data were taken from the video documentation and transcription of twenty students' speeches of eleventh grade at MA AL-Mizan Pandeglan, Banten. The data then are classified and collected in the tabulation. This paper is based on the discourse analysis and systemic functional linguistics approach by Halliday. The writer analyses the speech by students mainly from the interpersonal meaning which focuses on the mood and modality types. The results of this research are 1) Statistically of 396 clauses in the data, there are 362 clauses or about 91.41% of declarative mood, followed by 22 clauses or 5.55% of interrogative mood, and 12 clauses or around 1,5% of Imperative mood. 2) The result of modality is about 140 modals in total. The speaker tends to use modal can and Must. The modality types consist of 33 clauses or 23.57% for the high degree, of 63 clauses, or about 45% for the medium degree, and 44 clauses, or about 31.42% for the low degree. 3) the students' speeches tend to use a declarative mood that aims to give information to the audience. While the researcher discovered that the dominant modality type is in medium degree. It means that the speaker is conveying the speech through median politeness.
