Abstrak

This study aims to analyse the gender difference in psychological barriers to students’ English speaking performance, students' views on these psychological barriers, and explore the factor causing gender difference in the dynamics of these barriers. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through observation, in-depth semi structured interviews, and Likert scale questionnaires from 42 students with 21 female students and 21 male students in class XI.A2 at SMAN 5 Kota Serang. The findings reveal that students experience various psychological barriers, namely anxiety, shyness, fear of making mistakes, fear of judgment, and lack of motivation. Two students did not consider the psychological barriers they experienced as obstacles that hindered their speaking performance, while the other four students considered psychological barriers to be obstacles to the development of their English speaking performance. More in-depth findings show that gender functions as a significant moderating factor. Female students reported experiencing higher overall shyness, especially related to fear of social judgment and perfectionism in pronunciation. Meanwhile, male students tend to be more inhibited by concerns about making mistakes. The fear stems from concerns that any mistakes they make will have a negative impact on their reputation.
