Abstrak

This study aims to analyze teacher–student interaction in the implementation of the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy in reading instruction for eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kemiri, class VIII B. Reading is an essential skill in English language learning; however, many students still face difficulties in comprehending texts and actively participating during the learning process. The DRTA strategy is expected to enhance students’ engagement through activities of predicting, reading, and confirming the content interactively. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of one English teacher and students of class VIII B at SMP Negeri 1 Kemiri. The findings revealed that teacher–student interactions occurred reciprocally and dynamically. The teacher acted as a facilitator, guiding students through prompting questions and providing feedback, while students actively participated by responding, discussing, and presenting their predictions about the text. The implementation of DRTA was found to improve students’ critical thinking, learning motivation, and reading comprehension skills. Based on these findings, the DRTA strategy is considered effective in fostering meaningful learning interactions and supporting the development of students’ reading abilities. This study recommends the use of DRTA as an innovative alternative strategy in teaching reading.
