Abstrak

This research analyzes in depth the use of prepositional phrases in thesis abstracts written by English Education students at UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. The main focus of this study is to evaluate how prepositional phrases, which are crucial components in the syntactic structure of English, are applied in academic writing. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data was collected from 20 thesis abstracts of 2019-2020 batch students who graduated in August and December 2024 with GPAs between 3.60-3.80, all of which have been published in the university repository. The data collection process included document collection, identification of prepositional phrases, and recording and classification using checklists and field notes. The data were then analyzed through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that there are a total of 59 prepositional phrases in the 20 abstracts studied. The phrases are divided into five categories: prepositions of time (2), place (36), purpose (7), manner (189), and agent (17).The prepositional phrases of manner are the most common, while the phrases of time are the least common. The majority of prepositional phrases function as adverbials, giving information about time, location, purpose, and method in the sentence, and there are no prepositional phrases that function as adjectival. It can be concluded that prepositional phrases have a vital role in the thesis abstracts of English Education students, helping to link ideas as well as indicate spatial and temporal relationships, with the dominant adverbial function.
