Abstrak

Textbooks provide pragmatic content to foreign language learners that can be implemented by students, for example politeness as a form of awareness of politeness and targets in achieving attitudes in learning activities. This study aims to investigate and analyze the politeness strategies reflected in the English book “When English Rings a Bell” for the 7th grade of junior high school and the dominant politeness strategies reflected in the data. This research uses Brown and Levinson's politeness theory of Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off Record. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with content analysis approach to analyze the data, including 20 dialogues in the book as the main source. The instrument used is the researcher himself with expert validation to collect the types of politeness strategies and sub-strategies of politeness and the dominant politeness strategies appearing based on the data. Based on the results found, the English book “When English Rings a Bell” for the 7th grade of junior high school contains 4 politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson with positive politeness strategies mostly dominate. The total amount of data from the dialog in the textbook is 91 data, researcher found 17 data that use Bald on Record strategy, 60 data that use positive politeness strategy, 11 data that use negative politeness strategy, and 3 data that use off record strategy. The conclusion found is that the book is quite suitable with the identified data to be a learning reference for junior high school students, especially in terms of behavior and how to speak well and politely.
