Abstrak
This study aims to find out the use of Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies in the animated movie Elemental: Forces of Nature. It also explores the film’s educational implications. The research employed a qualitative method with a pragmatic approach to analyze the types of politeness strategies used by the characters and to evaluate the film’s pedagogical value. Data were collected from the movie script and analyzed based on Brown and Levinson’s theory, which includes four primary strategies. The findings reveal that a total of 158 utterances were identified as containing politeness strategies, distributed as follows: bald on-record (50 utterances), positive politeness (61 utterances), negative politeness (26 utterances), and off-record (21 utterances). Positive politeness was the most frequently used strategy, reflecting the film’s emphasis on empathy and social bonding. The application of each strategy varied depending on the characters’ relationships, emotional states, and cultural backgrounds. In addition to the linguistic analysis, a total of 56 utterances were examined in relation to their potential impact on teaching and learning. The findings also further suggest that these politeness strategies can be integrated into speaking activities in the classroom. By using the movie’s dialogues, students can practice authentic speech, improve their fluency and accuracy, and develop pragmatic competence. Thus, the study concludes that Elemental: Forces of Nature is not only entertaining but also pedagogically valuable as a medium to support speaking skill development in English language learning. In conclusion, this study suggests that animated films with rich pragmatic content can serve as effective tools in English language education.
