Abstrak
This research investigates the pronunciation errors of English vowels made by eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 10 Kota Serang. The primary objective is to identify the types of vowel pronunciation errors and analyze the contributing factors behind them. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, using instruments such as pronunciation tests, phonetic transcription, observation, and interviews. The findings reveal that the most frequent type of error is substitution, where students replace target vowel sounds with those more familiar in their native language, followed by insertion errors. Mispronunciations frequently involve long vowels and diphthongs, such as /iː/, /eɪ/, and /aʊ/, which are often substituted with simpler monophthongs due to first language interference. Data analysis also indicates that the contributing factors include limited phonological awareness, lack of exposure to native pronunciation, low motivation, and psychological aspects such as shyness and lack of confidence. The study concludes that English vowel pronunciation remains a significant challenge for Indonesian junior high school students. It recommends that English teachers emphasize phonemic and phonetic training, incorporate interactive pronunciation activities, and utilize technology to enhance learners’ awareness and accuracy in producing English vowel sounds.
