Abstrak

Writing the introduction section of an undergraduate thesis is one of the most challenging tasks for students, as it requires the ability to organize ideas, provide background information, and justify the significance of the study. This research aims to analyse the rhetorical moves employed in the introduction sections of undergraduate theses written by students of the English Education Department at the State Islamic University of Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. Specifically, the study identifies the rhetorical moves used, explores the challenges faced by students, and examines the common mistakes in applying these moves. This study employed a qualitative content analysis method by analysing 30 undergraduate theses using Swales’ (1990) Create A Research Space (CARS) model as the analytical framework. The findings revealed that Move 1 (Establishing a Territory) and Move 3 (Presenting the Present Work) were the most frequently employed, while Move 2 (Establishing a Niche) appeared less frequently and was often underdeveloped. The main challenges faced by students included difficulties in articulating research gaps, limited academic vocabulary, weak transitions, and lack of argumentative writing. Common mistakes identified were omission of Move 2, vague research objectives, redundancy in Move 1, and weak rhetorical flow. These results indicate that although students are generally able to introduce the topic and state the purpose of their research, they struggle to establish a clear research gap and present their study persuasively. This study suggests the need for explicit instruction in academic writing, particularly in applying the CARS model, to improve the quality of thesis introductions in Islamic higher education institutions.
