Abstrak

This paper investigates the correlation between language anxiety and student speaking ability at the Second Grade Junior High School of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Serang). The writer focuses on the title of this research: “correlation between language anxiety and student speaking ability”. This research uses a correlational study at the Second Grade Junior High School of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Serang). The method of this research used correlational method with product moment formula. The subject of this research is Second Grade Junior High School of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Serang). The time of this research is two month of the first semester, 2016. The data is collected giving questionnaire to know student language anxiety and giving test for the students’’ score speaking skill. The research was conducted based on the statements of study as follow: 1): How is students’’ anxiety at Second Grade Junior High School of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Serang? 2) How is students’ speaking ability at Second Grade Junior High School of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Serang? 3) Is there negative correlation between language anxiety and students’ speaking ability at Second Grade Junior High School of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Serang?The objective of the research are1) to know students’ anxiety at Second Grade Junior High School of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Serang 2) to know students’ speaking ability at Second Grade Junior High School of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Serang. 3)To find any correlation between language anxiety and students’ speaking ability at Second Grade Junior High School of SMP Negeri 2 Kota Serang. The writer uses product moment formula to find the correlation between language anxiety and student speaking ability. The result of correlation is the correlation coefficient valuer_(xy= -0.643).in relation to the table of critical value from Pearson Product Moment on the significant level at 0.005 = 0.423 and at 0.01 = 0.537, the correlation coefficient is significant as the value of r_xy is higher than both significant level. It shows the correlation between both variables is quite high and lead to negative correlations.
