Abstrak

This research aimed to describe the readability level of reading texts in English National Examination for senior high school especially science class. The writer used descriptive method to analyze, measuring and describe the readability level of the selected reading texts in English National Examination on 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 academic years. The data analyzed in this research were four reading texts and the texts are descriptive text, procedure text, analytical exposition and biography text. Based on the analysis by using Flesch Reading Ease Formula, two texts are fairly easy level, one text is in standard level, and another text is in difficult level. In average, the texts are in standard level (62.5). It is found that according to the theory of Flesch Reading Ease by Rudolf Flesch, the texts are readable for the second grade of senior high school. Based on the analysis by using cloze test result showed that the texts one (56.95%) and four (63.18%) got the average score above 50%. Those reading text included in the Independent Level. The text two (42.28%) included in the Instructional Level and text three (19.36%) included in Frustration Level. In average the cloze test score is 45.49% and included in Instructional level. It means that the reading texts in English National Examination were not suitable to be used by students. Because of the texts were predicted to be appropriate difficulty; it means the students can read the texts but still needed the teachers’ guidance whereas when the students reading texts in English National Examination could be read the texts independently. After conducting interviews with the students and teacher, the problem of the students are the students confused to choose the right word to fill in the blank, many unfamiliar words and lack of vocabulary mastery. In addition to the teacher has to pay attention to improving students’ vocabulary mastery so that students’ reading comprehension of the text can be improvement.
