Abstrak

This research conducted to see the effectiveness of authentic materials in procedure text toward students’ writing ability at the tenth grade of SMA Ma’arif Cilegon. The research is conducted based on the statement of problem: 1) How is the student’s writing ability at SMA Ma’arif Cilegon? 2) How is the application of using authentic materials on student’s writing ability? 3) How is the effectiveness of using authentic materials on student’s writing ability? According to research problems, the object of research are: 1) To know the students’ writing ability at SMA Ma’arif Cilegon. 2) To know the authentic material applied to teaching learning process in writing. 3) To find out the effectiveness of using authentic materials on teaching writing. To answer the questions, the writer collects data from the tenth grade of SMA Ma’arif Cilegon consist of 60 students. The writer takes all the population as the sample of the research and divide into two classes. The first class is experimental class and the second class is control class. As the experimental class, the writer used class X A which consist of 30 students. The control class, the writer used class X B which consist of 30 students. This use experimental research and the data is gathered through test. The result of research show that students’ writing ability before treatment without using authentic materials is weak. In learning English, the students implementation the writing by make a procedure text. The result of data analysis showed mean score of experimental class on the pre – test is 49,77 and 70,73 on post – test. Mean score of control class students on pre – test is 42,13 and 51,47 in post – test. There is the development for students writing skill either experimental or control class from pre – test and post – test. The result hypothesis from the effectiveness of using authentic materials to improve students’ writing ability the value of tobservation is bigger than ttable. Tobservation = 10,5 > ttable = 2,00 in 5% and also tobservation = 10,5 > ttable = 2,66 in 1%. According to the hypothesis formula it means that Ha (alternative hypothesis) of the result is accepted and Ho (null hypothesis) is rejected. There is significant effective in use authentic materials on students’ writing ability at the tenth grade of SMA Ma’arif Cilegon.
