Abstrak

This research explores the use of Movie in students speaking. The title of this research paper is “The Effectiveness “Akeelah and The Bee” movie in Improving Students’ Speaking (An Experimental Research at The Second Grade of SMK PGRI Labuan)”. The research is conducted based on the main problems 1) How is the students’ English speaking in second grade of SMKPGRI Labuan? 2) How is the using movie applied in teaching speaking for Second grade of SMK PGRI Labuan? 3) How is the effectiveness of using movie in speaking English toward a student achievement for second grade of SMK PGRI Labuan?.This research is aimed at 1) knowing the students ability speaking English in second grade of SMKPGRI Labuan, 2) knowing the application of using movie in improving student’s speaking, 3) knowing effectiveness of using movie in improving student achievement in improving speaking skill. To answer the questions, the writer collects the data from 60 students in two classes, one class as the experimental class and another one is as the control class, by using movie in experimental class. The population is the Second Grade of SMK PGRI Labuan, consisted of 30 students A as the experimental class and 30 Students class B as the control class are taken as the sample. Since the research uses experimental method, the data is gathered through pretest and posttest. The result of the research shows that the hypothesis stating, there is significant of speaking ability. It means as media that there is significant different of speaking ability between both classes. The difference of student’s speaking ability of student using movie is better performance than the student’s not using movie. It can see from mean score of experiment class in pre-test with mean score ΣX1=40,7and post-test with mean score ΣX2=71,7. Meanwhile the mean score of control class in pre-test with mean score ΣX1=38,6 and post-test with mean score ΣX2=50,2. The result of the research shows, that null hypothesis is rejected it’s showed from statistical value which is significant 5% = 2,00 and significant of 1% = 2,65 and the result of to= 5,61. Based on the calculating data of t-test using movie of “Akeelah and The Bee” in teaching speaking in an effective way for students. Finally, it was suggested that English teacher should have appropriate method in teaching English and be more motivated in order to make teaching and learning process more enjoyable.
