Abstrak
This research designed to find out the effectiveness of silent reading strategy in reading comprehension. The research conducted based on the main problem: 1) Is silent reading strategy effective in improving students reading comprehension? 2) How far is the effectiveness of silent reading strategy in reading comprehension?. This research oriented to the following aims: 1) To know whether silent reading strategy is effective in improving students reading comprehension. 2) To know how far the effectiveness of silent reading strategy in reading comprehension. This research is used experimental research. To answer the questions, the writer collected the data from 80 students spread in two classes, one class as an experimental class and another one as a control class. The population is 8th grade of SMP Daarul Muttaqien II, while class VIII A as the experimental class and class VIII B as the control class are taken as the sample. The result of the research shows that the hypothesis, that the null hypothesis is rejected its showed from statistical value that significant 5% = 1,99 and significant of 1% = 2,63 and the result of to = 3,39. Based on calculating the data of t-test that showed silent reading strategy was effective in reading comprehension. Finally, it was suggested that English teacher should have appropriate method in teaching English and be more motivated in order to make teaching and learning process more enjoyable.
