Abstrak

The research investigates “An Analysis of EFL Students Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety”. This research was to aims shed light on the phenomenon of speaking anxiety among fourth student semester at State Islamic University Banten, particularly anxiety related to the English language. The objectives of the research are; 1) To know kind of anxieties do the students have in speaking. 2) To identify what the factors cause students’ speaking anxiety in English Foreign Language. 3) To know what do students overcome their anxiety in speaking. This research used qualitative descriptive research with interview and make questionnaire as the research instrument involving one class with a total 39 students fourth semester as the sample. The questionnaire results determined student anxiety category into five categories from low to high level of anxiety. After that, 10 students from the low anxiety and the high anxiety category were selected to be interviewed to find causes and solutions to deal with anxiety. The result of this study showed that 13 (33%) students who are "Anxious," 24 (62%) students who are "Mildly Anxious," 2 (5%) students who are "Very Anxious," and only 2 (5%) students among 39 students are "Very Anxious." The results of this research show that from psychological aspect more than half of the students (62%) are moderate anxiety, and 15 students (38%) are severe anxiety. Furthermore, after identifying the interview result, the researcher found six factors causing students anxiety: students' poor English skills, the fear of misinterpretation, low self-esteem, fear of making mistakes then being criticized (fear of negative evaluation), lack of preparation, and excessive worry about tests. Researchers also drew several solutions that could be used to reduce student anxiety; change the mindset, prepare well, practice to improve student's English skills and confidence, and be brave.
