Abstrak

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a 'know, want and learn' strategy in writing descriptions for second-year students of SMP Negeri 1 Pakuhaji Tangerang. It is conducted based on the research questions 1) How is students ability in writing descriptive text at second grade of SMPN 1 Pakuhaji before and after using KWL strategies? 2) How is the effectiveness of using a KWL strategies at second grade of SMPN 1 Pakuhaji? and the objective of study are 1) To get result student ability in writing before and after using KWL strategies. 2) To find out the effect of using the KWL strategies. This research used an experimental research design and data were collected from 70 students in two classes (experimental and control classes). The results of this study are presented from data on pretest and posttest scores. It can be noticed from the mean pre-test score (51.31) and post-test mean score (67.85) for the experimental class. On the other hand, based on statistical calculations, the values of to (3.14) and df (68) were significant 5% (ttable = 1,66) and significance 1% (ttable = 2,38). ). Comparing to the to and ttable, the result is to > ttable = 3,14 > 1,66 and to > ttable = 3,14 > 2,38. It means that tobservation (to) is higher than ttable (tt), so Null Hypothesis (HO) is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that using Know-Want-Learn strategies in writing descriptive text has significant impact on improving students’ writing ability.
