Abstrak
This study aims to explore English Education students’ digital readiness and ethical concerns in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for academic writing at the State Islamic University Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. The rapid development of AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and QuillBot has significantly influenced students’ academic writing practices, offering both advantages and ethical challenges. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method involving 10 students who participated in semi-structured interviews, 63 students who completed questionnaires, and documentation of students’ Academic Writing course scores. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The findings revealed that most students demonstrated a high level of digital readiness, reflected in their familiarity with and confidence in using AI based tools for academic purposes. However, several students expressed uncertainty in distinguishing between ethical and unethical uses of AI, particularly regarding originality, plagiarism risks, and adherence to academic integrity principles. The study concludes that students are digitally competent yet still require clearer institutional guidelines and ethical literacy to navigate AI use responsibly. These results highlight the need to integrate digital literacy and ethical instruction into higher education curricula to promote responsible and reflective AI use in academic writing.
