Abstrak

This research study of Indonesian language interference in terms of an error analysis in the English writing of eighth-grade students. The study aimed to identify the types of interference present in students' written English texts and to understand the students' perspectives on the interference they produced. A qualitative research method with a case study approach was employed. The research instruments used were document analysis and interviews. A total of 27 eighth-grade students from SMPN 2 Balaraja were selected as the unit of analysis. The study found that many students exhibited language interference, both interlingual and intralingual. Interlingual interference included phonological, orthographic, lexical, and grammatical interference. Intralingual interference encompasses overgeneralization, ignorance of rule boundaries, incomplete application of rules, and incorrect conceptual hypotheses. Interview results indicated that students were aware of their writing mistakes but struggled with English due to limited knowledge and a tendency to translate from Indonesian. Despite these challenges, they expressed a desire to improve their English writing for school and future opportunities and actively sought help. From the analysis, it was concluded that many students still applied Indonesian language rules when writing in English, and many did not fully understand the rules of English itself. However, they recognized their errors and expressed a commitment to continue improving and learning to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
