Abstrak

The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of anxiety on the English speaking ability in Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Kibin. This research used quantitative methods with a correlational approach. This research involved all eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Kibin as the population, with a sample of 32 students selected randomly through a cluster sampling technique. The instrument in this research consist of a speaking test to measure students English speaking ability and a questionnaire modified from Horwitz's (1986) to measure students' anxiety level when speaking English. The spearman correlation test results show that there is a negative and strong correlation between the two varibles with a significance value of <.001 the significance value less than 0.05 and a Spearman Correlation coefficient value of -.652, which means that students who experience higher anxiety tend to have lower english speaking ability. Meanwhile, the result of the hypothesis test show that there is a significance value of <.001 less than 0.05, so that the Ha is accepted it can be concluded that anxiety significantly influences the speaking ability of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kibin.
