Abstrak

This research aimed at a critical discourse analysis of Joe Biden's speech (46th President of the United State of America). The theoretical basis is M.A.K. Halliday's Systematic Functional Grammar (SFG). The purpose of this CDA research is to uncover the language, ideology, authority, and impact of future presidential leadership. Data was obtained and analyzed qualitatively from President Joe Biden's twenty-one-minute speech. The speech is 2552 words in length. The results suggest that all processes in speech use ideational function in it is a transitivity system, with the relational process being the most prominent, followed by the mental and behavioral processes. Furthermore, the findings of the modality analyses indicated that the use of the general tense in speech was simple present and simple past with first and second pronouns as participants, with no third person singular. We, Can and Will exist in speech more frequently than other modal auxiliaries.
