Abstrak

This research investigates the use of “Mnemonic Strategy” in speaking lesson, specifically it is written in the title of this research paper is “Teaching Speaking through Mnemonic Strategy”. The research is conducted based on the formulation of the problem: 1) How is the student speaking ability before and after using mnemonic strategy, 2) how is the effectiveness of mnemonic strategy in increasing students’ speaking skill? This research is purposed: 1) To know the students speaking ability before and after using mnemonic strategy, 2) To know the effectiveness of mnemonic strategy in increasing students’ speaking skill. The research design of this study was an experimental study. In this research used only a class of student as experimental class. The subject of this study was eighth grade of MTs Daar El Mu’minin which consisted of 30 students. After collecting and calculating the data, the writer found that there was improvement of students speaking skill after being taught using “Mnemonic Strategy”. Most of students speaking score in post – test were better than their score in the pre – test. The students’ means score from pre – test was 40,66 whereas their mean score in post – test was 53,83. The difference score showed that the post – test score is higher than pre – test score. It means that there is the increasing score before and after using this strategy. The data that was gotten from pre – test and post – test were calculated, the result show that to is 10,44 and based on degree of freedom (df/dk) is 29 at significant level ttable 5% is 1,99 and 1% is 2,462 it can be concluded that to > ttable or 10,44 > 2,462 > 1,99 or Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Therefore, the result of the study shows that “Mnemonic Strategy” is effective to increase students’ speaking skill.
