Abstrak
This study aims to comprehend various kinds of in-depth information and experiences from the teachers’ strategies in building up students’ self confidence in speaking activities. The research questions to be discussed in this study are three points: (1) What are the teachers’ strategies in building up students’ self-confidence in speaking activities?, (2) How do the students’ respond toward teachers’ strategies in building up their self-confidence in speaking activities?, and (3) What are the students’ self-confidence levels in speaking?. This study employed descriptive qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. In collecting data, interview and questionnaire were employed. The interview data were collected from a total of five English teachers and randomly selected nine students were interviewed. The questionnaire data were collected from a total of five classes involving 7th, 8th, and 9th grades using an a Confidence in Speaking English as a Foreign Language (CSEFL) questionnaire by Griffee. The findings revealed three strategies used by the teachers in building up student’s self-confidence in speaking activities, namely problem-based learning (PBL), project-based learning (PjBL), and discovery learning (DL). Besides, these strategies positively impacted other skills, such as collaborative, creative, and critical thinking that have been needed in the 21st century. In addition, students’ responses toward teachers’ strategies revealed a positive attitude as they responded that the teachers’ strategies built their confidence when speaking, felt happy, and learning material was easier to understand. This was strenghthened by the results of the Confidence in Speaking English as a Foreign Language (CSEFL) level questionnaire showed that students generally possess moderate and high self-confidence in speaking. As a result, the strategies used by teachers indicated the effective strategies in building up students’ self-confidence in speaking.
